ARC303 - Designing and Writing Interoperable Services: The Contract First Approach
by Malek Kemmou
Started the day with this session. It is nice to know the concepts and code for enabling Service Orientation in our applications. I always find it difficult to understand what some of our local SOA guys are talking about. The question of What, Why, When and How were always never answered in their presentations. This session was good as I finally get to see some code examples and get information that is straight-to-the-point.
Some extract: There were some emphasis on DataSet not being suitable for interoperability due to its complex nature. Malek uses arrays to pass collections of objects and I was wondering if using other types of collection will be ok. Thank god he cleared my doubts.
DEV320 - Architecting and Building Smart Client Applications in .NET - The Future of Software Development
by Tim Huckaby
I attended this session because I thought it will help my Rich-client exploration. Unfortunately, it was a big dissapointment. Don't get me wrong, Tim Huckaby was a great speaker and I enjoyed his jokes and demos. I was dissapointed on what .NET could offer today as opposed to Java rich-clients. :(
After the session, I managed to catch up with Tim and he led me into the speakers room to ask me to show him what I meant by rich-client. So, I pointed him to various web sites and he was impressed with what he saw. He immediately sent off e-mails to his contacts in MS to look into the matter to explore any possibilities to do something equilvalent in .NET.
Observation: Kesian the speakers. They all look so stress in the speaker rooms, frantically typing on their notebooks. And the room doesn't offer much space for them. :(
ARC402 - Connected Systems: using Web Services Enhancements 2.0 for Messaging Over Multiple Machiens and Networks
by William Tay
Because of the chat with Tim, I had missed the first hour of this session. Anyway, I wanted to meet William, my friend from the Singapore .NET community (sgdotnet). It's good to put a face on the nick :)
His session was quite interesting. He demonstrated the cool stuff in WSE 2.0. However, he recommends that we only use WSE 2.0 when the client demands it. That's because WSE 3.0 and Indigo are coming soon. I can't wait for Indigo to arrive.
ARC304 - Authentication, Authorization and Impersonation in .NET
by Goksin Bakir
This is the last session for today. It was a bit dry with no code examples but it was helpful in deciding how we should design our authentication and authorization. There were talks on role-based and resource-based permissions and also covered some authentications methods such as basic, windows integrated, digest and etc.
